I do have one on the outside side wall of a couple of my wooden vivs for Russian rat snakes. These only require a warm end temperature of 78F and a 24"x12" heat mat gets it to that with no problem at all.
lol im stupid i forgot to add .. this is for an african fat tail not a snake .. (i know im in the snake section but was reading through and noticed someone said no heat mats inside a viv ) or do they mean solely for snakes cause with what i have the mat needs to be inside and on the bottom as they absorb the heat through there bellies

all animals can burrow, plenty of substrate won't stop anything from getting to the mats surface

I have always used stats and always will, i would rather not risk the life of any animals for the sake of £20 or whatever thanks, My opinion if you cant spend £20 to not risk the life of an animal then your certainly not bothered enough to keep an animal, Thanks

My little Florida (Brooksi) Kingsnake died, because the RUB it was in never had a thermostate, and over heated when those temps started to sore!

It got cooked alive!

I share this with anybody who questions whiether you need a stat, as it may save the life of one of your serpents!

It's simply a case of "It's better to be safe than sorry"!

I wouldnt put it inside if i were you mate....and esp dont cover it with substrate...they can catch fire if you do !! under the viv with a small air gap is the best way......If you put it under a glass tank with no air gap it can crack the glass !
The heat will transfer though wood quite well....ive used old roofing slates or large flatish rocks over the area where the matt is...helps spread the heat a bit.

think you will find it will be a waste of time putting a mat under a wooden viv.
If you do have to use a mat.....which I don't.....best to put it inside covered with something like ply with holes in or ceramic tiles with the stat touching the heat mat so the mat cannot get too hot.
