I would disagree with that even if the manufacturer's instructions say it can't happen - because used correctly, underneath a faunarium that does not contain too thick a layer of substrate, without regulation, they can and do exceed the safe basking temperatures of the sort of species that most people are likely to keep IN a faunarium (i.e. Corns, Kings and other "easy" snakes).

Whether that is hot enough to create actual BURNS is not the issue - if it causes the death of the snake because the snake will not go bask because the basking side is too hot and becomes too cold while trying to digest - causing multiple regurges - it is still because the mat was exceeding the temperature the snake needed to experience. I have spoken with one person who lost a snake for precisely that reason.

Taken from this site: mattstat

also more info here

and here
I enjoy a debate as much as the next man, but at least make an effort! Those links are clearly cut and pasted from each other! I've no idea who wrote the first but it is clear that all of the 'authors' of those sites have cut and pasted the information from one of the others, clearly without a second thought as what it actually says!. I mean quoting an ebay sellers blurb? Come on now, you can do better than that!

Sorry mate....But I suggest you put that argument to the manufacturer then.......ive never had problems with using some heatmatts with no stat, and ive never had any herp burn its self on a matt, if its too hot in the middle of the matt then the reptile tends to sit on the edge where its optimal heating temp is located (as im sure you know the temps will differ & reduce the further away you get from the centre of the matt).......yes im sure accidents can happen but an element of common sence has to be exercised when using them.

Yes your right........they used the information from the manufacturers web site.....surely youre not suggesting the maker of the matt is wrong about the product they make and sell !!
If they gave out misleading or incorrect information I'm sure they'd have people wanting to sue them !

Im just glad the name callings gone and its returned to a healthy debate

Actually, their instructions are very carefully worded.... they suggest that if you have an animal with specific temperature requirements, you use a thermostat.

Funny, ALL the reptiles I keep have specific temperature requirements!

If you actually do own any reps.....you go ahead and use a mat without a stat........when you eventually kill one of your "reps" don't come crying back here
