Ok, here is a summary of how my Ultratherm heat mat instructions tell me to set it up if I am using a faunarium or some similar "small plastic tank" setup:

Position the mat to cover one half to two thirds of the bottom of the tank.
The mat can be used inside or outside the tank.
Ensure the substrate is less than 1cm deep.
Put 6mm-thick polystyrene on the other side of the mat to insulate it so that all the heat goes upwards into the tank.
If I have concerns about overheating, fit a suitable thermostat.

You bet your bippy I'd have concerns about overheating at that point!

(Oh, and it says that if you're using a wooden viv, the mat MUST be put inside the viv to avoid thermal blocking)

cant be bothered to read all 25 pages but simple answer yes.. I know people have used them without but why take the risk for the sake of a thermostat!

Despite what the makers say, there are plenty of examples of heavy bodied snakes laying directly on heat mats and getting seriously burned from them through thermal blocking. If the makers tell you not to put them under the viv ( which they do ) then you are not going to want a heavy 10 foot Boa or an even heavier python laying on one either are you ?
