Not neccesarily, I'm not an electrical engineer or owt, but I think it may be dependent on the age/quality etc of the electrics in your house, and they're designed to take a certain amount of punishment before breaking the circuit. Also, a lot of people use DIY electrics, and I don't think animals are taken into consideration with the design of domestic electrical systems.

BUT, like I say, I'm not a sparky

I highly highly suggest the use of a thermostat

Actually youve reminded me of a chap that bought a set-up from my old shop....the stat malfunctioned & the ceramic just stayed on full power, the amount of heat it produced was unbelivable......he bought a heatmatt after that !
Im amazed about the amount of people who cant get it into their heads that others do things differently to them and they dont have any problems......how narrow minded can you get !!

And yes accidents do happen and nothing is fail safe !!
Ssthisto doesnt like using heatmatts prefering ceramics and other heaters....im the opposite....if a stat malfunctions on a matt your going to have less of a disaster than one failing on a ceramic !
Ssthisto cant get the required temps using matts.....i find i can....and the 1000's of healthy herps ive bred over the years is surley a testement to this....if id had problems then i would have changed the way i use something or used a different product.

Im sure alot on here are under the illusion that i dont use stats.....i do....just not on everything...only where needed.

I never said they were mandatory, but I'm from the better safe than sorry school of thought. And like I've said previously, I'm not rubbishing anyone's methods, nor being ignorant of them, I'm merely trying to get my point across for the use of stats, as whether we like it or not, accidents can and do happen, even with stats, they may not happen to anyone here, but they can and do.
