I'm sorry you've interpreted my honest question that way. I really *do* want to know, if there is a way to improve how I do things, how to do that. What good does it do me to close my mind so tight that new ideas can't get in?

I'm neither an electrician nor originally from the UK... which is why I asked. I must admit I tend to assume that what people say online is genuine

I tend to use horticultural cable - both Biogreen and Parasene work very well when on a pulse proportional thermostat, and often in longer lengths than the ones with the reptiles on the box.
what I have said about mats is true.I am that type of person in red type
I don't want a slanging match with anybody......I just feel it is not in the snakes best interest to use a mat without a stat.......thats it.
As far as electrical gear goes, anything can fail and burn your house down but at least if you use a stat.....you have put some sort of safety measure in place (as well as the fuse of course).....not brilliant but better than nothing because even a stat can fail

In that case your dispute has little relevance to thermostats and their ability to control the heat, its just a safety measure to avoid surges. In which case you can use an anti-surge extention whatsit.

I was thinking more of a safety measure to stop you frying your snake......the thing about not burning you house down is an added bonus......is that clearer for you

The statement I understand fully, despite it being completely incorrect.

How is it incorrect, a stat being used as a safety measure to not burn your pet??

As an experiment I plugged in a 6"/9" habistat, without a thermostat and laid the thermometer external probe on the mat (not taped down.)

After 15 mins the temperature read 41.3c - hot enough to kill a snake. Room air temperature was 22.9c.

Same experiment with the thermometer probe on the floor of a rub on the heat mat. After 15 mins the temperature of the floor of the RUB above the mat read... 41.1c. Hot enough to kill a snake.

Argue away..
