The plastic is a standard hatchling tub as sold to many beginners as is the heat mat. And lots of people use tissue as substrate. The snake will lay directly over the mat and if the body warms before the head it will not move away.
Do what YOU like but we're talking about beginners here who IMHO should always be sold a thermostat with a heat mat set up.

I can't see how this is even a debate.

A stat is a safety precaution to prevent your snake getting burned. Why wouldn't you use one? Why wait until it is too late?
