Hijacking oh's acc. totally agree, when we decided to get our first Royal, everything was priced up beforehand, viv, heatmat or ceramic, bulb guard, stat, hides etc. I know we would be very upset if any of our snakes were harmed through complacency, it is always better to be safe than sorry. |

I really can't see the point in this thread.......it's not as if it is a matter of opinion or choice we have for a snakes welfare......stat.....or no stat.
There is absolutely no argument for not using a stat so what exactly are we talking about ? Anybody that does not use a stat with any heat source is an idiot...end of Paul |

Rather have a happy snake with a stat for £30.00 than an unhappy snake and a vet bill for ££££.

only when i wear my psychic underpants,
after u build enough things, u learn what thickness of poly and thickness of build material, the air gap between a pad and surface, substrate choice and room temp, heat from additional sources like light tubes, choice of species, mass of specimens, type of hide, if it has a bottom, if so so how thick, what material, clay, plastic wood etc, u learn how all that goes together and how to make it work, beginners generally dont know this becuase they havent done it yet, i believe theres a term for it, oh yes "experience" the easiest unstatted setup iv made consisted of a drawer system (ala the applemeister) with a glass heat panel in the drawer below which was a 20mm sealed gap, the heat strip ran all the way down the system and reached 88 constant, i only knew this worked becuase im a parnoid tweaker and i watch a thermometer readout for days before anything with a pulse goes near it. experience is a very valuable tool, in learning as much from mistakes as successes. ed Last edited by loxocemus; 04-07-2009 at 12:20 AM.. |

dont agree with your comments my heatmats went up to over 102f without stat before putting snake in viv.never use a heatmat without stat i would recommend this advice to everyone just common sense, why take a chance with your snakes,i always er on the side of what might happen will happen.

Ive used heatmatts without stats before..in hot weather matts get turned off or put on a timer...never had snakes burn themselves, the snake regulates its own heat....if it gets too hot them it moves to a cooler part.
This all depends on the size of the viv, the amount of ventilation & the wattage of the matt. I couldnt give a toss if someone thinks i should have a stat....my snakes are happy & healthy & thats all that matters to me.
