simple question - does a heatmatt that is to be used in a snake viv need to be on a stat?

im being told it doesnt, i was pretty sure you need a stat on ANY heat source.

(for the reocrds i use stats on everything of mine)

it is a bit mature .. you yourself and everyone here knows now that there will be a bit of a bitch now saying about mats must be kept on stats .. honestly its all been done before theres no need to proove the point

theyve admitted it which was brave of them in the 1st place but they have corrected it now so thats all that matters and that the snakes are in good health .. no point in saying "oh they could have been burnt" yes they could have but they didnt and are fine now with stated matts so leave it

In my opinion, any heat source should be controlled by a thermostat, just take a look at the temperatures we've been experiencing recently and imagine how much more heat would be put into your vivarium without a thermostat to control the heat source.

As far as I am personally concerned, based on my experiences with over two dozen mats of various sizes and manufacturers:

ALL of them exceed safe basking temperatures for the species I keep when running normally plugged straight into the wall. Most of them average around 110 degrees fahrenheit (although my monitors and tegs would do fine with this, they have ceramic and bulb heating setups... those temperatures can cause brain damage in the snakes I keep) and some of the SMALLER ones exceed 130 when not regulated.

Now, if you're keeping ackies or something and using a heat mat, you might not need a thermostat... but I cannot think of a single species of snake where contact temperatures of 110-140 are appropriate.

look what this is is that where i went to get my snake, none were on thermostats and none had burns, were ill or whatever.

they are experienced reptile keepers and have never had any problems with heatmatt burns, so i guess i dont think they need one.

none ever got higher than the basking tempretures.

i can see how they could help.
