CITIES and the World Trade Organisation both exist to control and maintain a legal trade in Wild Caught harvest. While the UK is one of many importers of WC it is also a very active exporter of WC harvest. We send many tons of WC food to other countries in the shape of rabbit, wood pigeon, pheasant, deer, eels, trout etc etc......
Keeps vets in employment are normally a result of being in the wild and can normally be sorted out. Stress is a human emotion. The animals obviously do go through some raised responses while being caught but there is no evidence that being captured by a human is any worse than being captured by a predator (something that happens in the wild every day) and they get to survive human capture. Reptiles and amphibians settle down quietly when packed correctly (this is controlled by the International Air Transport Association) and should arrive quickly at their destination where they can be cared for by the person importing them. In the time it took you to type that several wild animals would of been killed and eaten by predators. The wild is not a bed of roses. A lot of third world countries depend on wild harvest as a major part of the economy. Without a steady flow of wild caught animals the hobby would have no new blood lines, no new species to work with and would see a decline in the choice of animals available. Can you show me any animals in your collection that did not originate from a wild caught animal some where back in the ancestry? Natrix |

But theres nothing wrong with using wc reptiles in breeding programs. Too many moan about wanting this and wanting that but dont want a fussy wc snake...so some poor guy has to breed them. Plus all of my wc animals are fecal and often blood sampled and then 6 -12 month quartining before they go to breeding ![]() |

I may have an opportunity to go to Bulgaria "herping" and so I thought I would look into the possibilities of bringing a group of something back. I would have all measures possible in place to insure the survival of all animals.
Bulgaria has some really great looking reptiles! Check out this link - Herpetofauna of Europe : s bulgaria (may 2005) I would be staying in Sofia (I think). |
