you would be better off keeping the area moist...the viscotears works with the moistor from the eye lense its self.

Years ago the suggestion on most books or those in the know was to use a bit of sticky tape wrapped around your finger (stick side out) and try and lift the offending cap off... this method seems a lot more sensible.....

Lucky for me, any bad shed is resolved by giving the snake a luke warm bath and placing damp towels in a plastic box with the snake, however this method shown here seems less stressful for the snake

Hiya, this will only work for eyecaps.
Have you tried leaving him in a damp pillow case for a few hours?

I must admit I wished I had seen this thread a few moths back. My 18 yr old royal retained an eyecap 3 sheds ago. I couldn't remove it so rather than risk damage and stress, left him alone, hoping that it would be shed next time (which has happened in the past) - regretfully it didn't so now he has two retained caps which give the eye a silvery sheen. He does seem to react to movement on that side so I don't think he is going blind.

I got some of the Viscotears and applied a large blob yesterday evening. I've left him in his viv overnight. I've re-applied some more now (having now just got in from work) but there was little in the movement of the old eyecaps. Is it just a case of constantly applying the gel, or does this process only work on "soft" scales after a shed ?

Normally it just comes off, sometimes it needs a few goes...it will soften the cap up for shedding aswell yes
