Avoid conifers, in fact anything with needles instead of leaves. Having said that I used to have a really good branch I found in one of the wildlife parks and I'm sure it was from a conifer. Never caused a problem.


I agree that cutting green wood and drying it out is the key. I leave it in the garage to dry out for few weeks.

I prefer to remove the bark though as that will remove most critters and any pollution from roads or sprays. I just give the branches a good scrub and a hose down. So long as the wood underneath is sound there's very little chance of problems.

I used some wood in a spider setup that was a bit more humid than my snake setups and it caused all sorts of problems. My method may only work in dry setups?
