Red face Can Snakes Breathe Underwater??

I know that this is probably a commonly asked question but my 1 year old female royal python who has recently moved into a new 4ft vivarium has an extra large exo-terra water dish on her cool side. I looked in on her late morning today and her whole head was submerged underwater - eyes, nose, mouth - everything - it didn't appear to me that she was breathing so in a panic - i flung the vivarium door open and took her out.

Is it possible for them to drown and how can i prevent it?
I've heard that they cannot breather underwater but can hold their breath?

Cheers.

Nah they cant breath underwater but in a relaxed state they can hold their breath for a long period of time.
