Question Is this normal???

Hi Guys,

Could the lack of a Female BOA make my male aggressive?

He's normally very placid in his overall behaviour, but just lately he’s started to dart out of his hide straight for my hand when I go in to his vivarium to change his water etc!

I’ve been told that it could be because it's the breeding period for Boa’s, and he’s being territorial!!!

His heating is controlled by Habistat (dimmer) and the humidity is between 45-65%.

Any advice would be very welcome.

Cheers
Andy

ok so heres the barage of common questions

How old
How big
What he eating
how often is he fed
si he fed in viv/rub
What size viv/rub
are you sure he's male

my male went off food and started tail waving when he was randy.

if he has to much open space ie not enough hides or too bigger hides he will feel insecure and get aggressive so please answer the above q's and lets see what we get

Hi and thanks for helping me

He's roughly 3 years old.
Between 6'6" and 7'
He's fed weekly one large rat
Fed in his Vivarium, tried to feed in in his Large rub but refuses!!!
He's in a 4x2x2 foot Viv
Not had him sexed but got large spurs either side of his anus (is it clovacal) and from there his tail goes long and thin and quite a distance to the tip of his tail. I've read many times that these are signs of a male BOA!

Is this any help to you?

Thanks for helping

Cheers
Andy

Would it be better to leave my hand there to find out what he does? what would his bite be equivalent to?

Something else that he's started to do is stretch up to the roof of the viv (2ft high) he looks as if he's looking for something!!!

He also comes to the front of the viv and stretches up against the glass and does the same but stays there for about 5 to 20 mins! if I then put my hand towards the glass he again darts for it, sometimes hitting the glass with his nose!!!

ok so with that info my male is 14 and just over 6 foot so its possible that your could be female, and i have never had my male aggressive through breeding season.

spurs arent really very good way of telling sex best get it probed by an expert.

at that size and age try feeding a larger prey less often as its sounds like he's being food aggressive ore then anything, but im sure the more boa wise will say more

as said in my other post sounds more food based jordan my boy used to that when he was hungry would climb all over the place but i uped his food size and for longer periods of time and he settled down again, good thing to remember boas are dustbins even if thier not hungry they will feed and you'll end up with a fat boa if you carry on feeeding him 1 L rat every week try a XL rat every two weeks.

with him biting well my other half got bite by my 6 foot female he said it didnt hurt but shocked him enough to never go near a boa since, if he was in hunitng mood then it could be worse, try teaching him what is and isnt feeding time but tap training (we use noise assicaotion SP) we tap the feeding tongs together on feeding day and we dont we its not 70% of my snakes soon learnt when it was feeding day from this, also ensure you dont smell of anything furry when you enter his viv i made this mistake with a royal and never want to try it with jordan

i hope this blab helps LOL

Hmmm thats just it, the person who owned my snake before me died, and the people who looked after it until they could get someone to buy it said it wasn't very old when asked what age!!!

I'll take ya advice and get him probed just to be 100% sure.

We have dogs and a cat, I always make sure that I was my hands before I open the viv and again when I close it.

He's so chilled normally, he even lays on my knee without moving for quite a while, then he's like this!!!
I usually get him out once a day so I then know he's used to being handled.

I thought it was the temps in the viv so I bought a Dimmer Habistat and keep an eye on his humidity but thats not changed his ways!

He could be a 'she' huh! are females like this? female snakes that is The spurs are about 1cm long and feel quite sharp & stiff if rubbed the opposit way!

If I feed him Jumbo rats every two weeks instead of Large rats weekly it could solve the problem! It wouldn't make him more hungry and for longer period? I'll shall take your advice 'Sender' and try it out

I put his thawed rat on top of his viv a hour before I feed it to him, this gets him excited he must be able to smell it eh! is that a good enough feeding trigger?

LOL ya OH not a snake lover I take it ... Ouch...
So still not wise to aproach my snake yet!!! I really miss getting him out
THANKS once again 'SENDER' you've been very helpful

Cheers
Andy

Andy your my female was moody at time but she was a rescue, heavier feeds will make him/her less hungry if you get me.

also it took two years for jordan to fully trust me, and even now when he has just came out of shed or going into it he cant a moody hissy bugger let me tell you
thats one thing i never asked could he/she be going into shed???

but at your boas size and possible age its very rare for it to be male but only a sexing will tell.

my Proven males spurs a tiny so not really a good test

im always here if you need and q answering or even want a chin wag about boas and thier funy habits

Trust me to get a dodgy BOA first its species now its sex
I was advised to POP him/her erm I don't think I'll be doing that
Thats why I looked in to other ways of sexing a BOA, but I agree with ya I'll get him/she/thingy/wotsit probed just to be on the safe side , why can't it be simple!!! one ware lipstick the other not

Thanks 'SENDER' for ya help and advice

Cheers
Andy

I fed him a large rat yesterday (Weds) should I feed him another ASAP then wait 2 weeks before feeding him a 'JUMBO'? or just wait two weeks and start Jumbo's from then on?
