I think 99.5% of the general public think snakes will eat them, so don't worry you are not alone.

Back to the original q, my first snake was a king snake and they are great first snakes due to the range of different colours and also the fact that they very very rarely refuse to feed. Corns are also great snakes for first snakes, although I personally haven't owned a corn. But they have so good a temperament that they are perfect for 'beginners'.

Really if you want a snake that will fit in that viv, you can have anything up to 4-5 ft ish. kismetbeardie gives a good bit of advice though, you will now be hooked on snakes. I have only kept snakes since february and I already have 3!
