It has been tentatively linked to RI's ... but I've not seen that in my collection.

- If the room is properly ventilated I don't see a problem. Passive smoking statistics are horribly over-exaggerated as it is. Forcing the animals to breathe smoke would be actively exhaling into their enclosure or some chav trying to get his animal stoned because he thought it was funny kind of thing.
I have to say if I had a dedicated rep room I prob wouldn't smoke in it. I keep my snakes in my Lounge and my Bedroom, both are quite big rooms, the doors are never closed and I smoke in both of them. I've never had problems, the only person to suffer from my habbit is me.

Strangely enough if someone is visiting that smokes tobacco, especially tailor made ciggys I'll either insist they don't, they go outside or if it's peeing down that they go into one of the reptile rooms. The reason being is they have to stand under one of the extractor fans in the Herp rooms that will whisk the noxious smelling smoke away. Otherwise I let Lynne smoke roll ups upstairs in the music room or bedroom as that's well away from the collection.

I love your selective reading and mis representation of the precise book you linked to.

I read that nitotinecan be deadly if ingested and also 'an association between chronic respiratory conditions in captive reptiles and households with one or more smokers in has been suspected'

I'm glad your reptiles haven't shown any problems yet, but if I was to tell you that my dad grew up in a smoking household and hasn't yet got cancer - does that make it OK to smoke with your kids in the room?

I hope you don't think yes!

...and as for the passive smoking thing 'not really being an issue' - you just keep telling yourself that! If it makes you feel better then its all good yes?

A quick google search will find hundreds of scientific articles discussing the increased likelyhood of health issues in companion animals that liv ein smoking homes. Admittedly not many on reptile, but here's how I see it.

On one hand reptiles have a slower metabolism and therefore a slower breathing rate than mammals but, on the other hand that just means that anything they do inhale will be in their lungs for longer, plus the fact that their home is only a small wooden box and that can very quickly become 10% cigarette smoke or more with a single exhale in the vivs direction, let alone a whole cigarettes worth of smoke (or two or three etc) in the same room night after night.....

Purely and simply by forcing another life to inhale your second hand smke you are denying them the basic right not to have to. It is simply selfish, nothing else.

regards

Andy

If you truely believe this then I feel really sorry for your family and friends but most of all - your pets.

I hotbox my snakes viv. It like it. It especially likes it if you pack it's mouth with bud and suck on it's cloaca. It's like using a chillum. Best to sellotape a load of ice cubes around it first to cool down that smoke.

thankyou bothrops for all your advice about the detrimental effects it can have on these animals, hopefully if it deters just one more person from smoking in close proximity to there reps then the thread has been worth while

I don't smoke anywhere in the house. havent since my girlfriend got pregnant, and my lil girl is one on sat! never smoked round the reps either as i don't think it's fair. why try and create a naturalistic looking viv if you are going to smoke in the same room. not a very natural environment for the snakes is it? and i always wash my hands before and after and between handlings every time.

What about the 'fumes' from central heating, cooking, attached garages and irritants like perfume and aftershave etc etc etc

Its not just us smokers that are harmful!!!!!!!!!!!
