As it seems most racking is used for royals, look at it this way;
Royals spend 99% of their time crammed into the smallest burrows they can find. African trappers have to dig them out because they are so crammed in. Now, we are basicly trying to replicate their enviroment in captivity. Whilst it would be possible to sculpt an entire burrow for them to live in, the RUBs make ideal artificial burrows. Look at one of the pics you posted; ![]() This snake has penty of space to move around, but the box is in a rack which allows light in from a single side. It is in and of itself a hide, the entire box is a replicated burrow. Whilst I agree that some snakes need to be in more than "just" a RUB, others thrive in these fake burrows we provide them. Royals are so prone to showing stress by not feeding, and frankly, if they were stressed in RUBS then no one would use them because their snakes wouldnt survive in them. Yes, vivs do look better to us, we enjoy seeing them in a nicely decorated vivarium. Subconsiously or not, we design vivariums to be pleasing to our eyes as well as suitable for the animal. If you take out the part that makes it pleasing to our eye, and just focus on it being suitable for the animal in question then vivariums would all have paper substrates a hide and a water bowl. As ever, everyone is entitled to their opinions, so long as we accept ours is not the only valid one.

You're concerned about the aesthetics? Personification of reptiles doesn't do them any good. Attempting to understand the world from their point of view does.

I don't mind keeping a snake in a RUB. As long as it is adequate size and hides etc.
Some snakes (from what I have read) do appear to thrive in RUBs. I have 2 baby snakes in RUB s presently. I do prefer viv set-ups as they are more pleasing on my eye. But does thus said animal really care? If you have a problem with unnatural set-ups (whether viv or rub or glass)then why keep reptiles at all? A wooden vivarium is still far from natural. As long as all basic needs are met, the animal is healthy, eating well, defecating and breeding then I don't see how they could be 'unhappy'. It is personal prefernce at the end of the day. I prefer Vivs in my front room as they look nicer but my set-ups for my snakes upstairs aren't as elaborate but they still have their needs met. Also are you sure you are really allowed to use other peoples pictures and sort of 'slate' them? Most of them clearly have been tagged with their names. Just in case someone takes the use of their pics in the wrong way. I am not sure on the legalities though. |

i think the pics you have shown in the first post look fine, like a lot of people have state - rain most elequantly - they act as a hide in racking systems
I have never used a rub, normally use faunaruims and then vivs, but I am getting a carpet python soon, and faunariuns don't allow for much height, so I have just purchased my first rub. going to kit it out as I would any other, but to return to what seems to be bugging you, I keep my royal in a viv, she is fine in it, but when she is in a little tub whilst I clean, she is also perfectly happy. Seems to me that this is bugging you, not the snake
