I'm with the others. I read that you gave advice (wrong and over reactive advice) and he took offence. His reply was quite reserved considering you were wasting his time. You then replied with a highly provocative and over the top, patronising response (especially with the TUT TUT at the end). I'm not suprised you then had the final response.

Royal pythons live in the wild. There they are regularly exposed to UV during the day. They choose to hide away from it down burrows and come out at night, however I'll bet they do bask occasionally.

Why would it 'harm' the snake or be a 'problem' for the snake to have UV tube during the day? By your own admission would see the snake curled up under a hide anyway - and they really don't get that hot and I would not be overly concerned about the need for a guard. Surely providing optimal conditions for your snake (i.e. simulating night and day for both diurnal and nocturnal animals) can not be a bad thing? (You can thanks Jabba on here for making me see the light on that one!)

I'm not saying for a second that snakes require UV (though they might do even better with it?) in order to survive and breed - but to suggest that it is somehow cruel, unnecessary or dangerous to provide daylight during the day is rediculous.

Just my opinion.

Cheers

Andy

Absolutely.

As long as the snake can get out of the light if it wants to and it's not too high a percentage tube - and the photo seems to show things it can get under - the UVB will do it absolutely no harm as long as it's set to a normal photoperiod (on for 12 hours, off for 12, give or take).

There is absolutely no evidence to show that non-albino snakes will SUFFER from having exposure to UVB. Certainly the royals at our local shop - who have 2% tubes if they're housed in vivs - are active, curious, feed readily and do not appear bothered by the light levels.

Yes, he was extremely aggressive to you in his e-mail. Heck, I'd have looked at it as "Ooh, look, a three-foot viv set up perfect for a lizard, and I even get a new royal for the racking system...." if I honestly believed that royals NEED to be kept in utter darkness.

Agreed.

UV is not harmful to snakes.

They get it in the wild (many of them).

Lol that backfired.Tbh if someone posted that to me too I would have either ignored it or said I know, and then would have had a go at your 'greenery bit' - who knows from there on lol.
By your second reply it sounded like you wanted to piss him off...
Having said this, just because he used the common F word doesn't make him some incredibly bad person.

Crickey I wouldnt buy it if it was me, the snake doesnt require uv, its a royal he needs to be in the dark not in the light, royals tend to hide during the day & come out as & when if food passes them by. Ah well glad I dont use uv for my royals.

And no I wasnt nosing around im into royals already have a fair lot. So how is looking at an ad being nosey
In fairness snakes do get UV in the wild. They may not directly require it for growth but even burrowing species get reflected UV.
If the royal has a hide and the UV tube is guarded from injury then where's the problem??
(P.s Royals leave the burrow and hunt for food rather than wait until it wanders by.)

a couple of people i know habitualy keep snakes under low percentage uv lighting, they are all perfectly healthy and happy...as has been said, there really was no reason for you to go on at him for not keeping his snake "correctly" when in fact he is! it may be different to how you do it, or i do it etc, but that doesn`t mean its wrong....the swearing was un-nescessary i agree...but i know for a fact if you said this to one particular guy i know who keeps most of his under uv light it would have been a much harsher reply lol...there seem to be so many internet "experts" who are quick to judge others without knowing facts, it seems to be a trend nowadays...almost trying to make themselves feel superior and more knowledgeable, the days of it being a reptile community are on their way out IMO.....a lot of the time its more like a reptile competition!

completey agree mate.

As i said before there used to be a time where no matter who you were, where you came from nor what you kept people would help eachother out.

Now it seems to be full of jealously, hatered and arguing.
