I've had several discussions on here about this with knowledgeable people like Saedcantas. She is in favour of giving all her snakes UVb. I'm somewhere in the middle. I give mine a proper day night cycle with seasonal adjustments, but not close enough to the bulbs to benefit from the UV. I'm not convinced enough yet to give all my nocturnal snakes the UVb treatment. If I had Diurnal species, I think I would though, as I do the diurnal lizards and the torts, even though snakes are carnivorous and still may not need it.

sorry if this comes acroos a bit rude - but people have said different things on this thread. Could the UV do the snake anyharm if so what are effects?

And where have I said "I know everything" nope sorry cant see that being typed in my posts or even claiming I know it all.
I have read all the thread - and what a good read it has been - i have found some of your posts a tad (as others have put it) cocky. Everyone has the right to share their opion but it is the way you word it and how its comes - ok there is a good chance you are not meaning it to come across that way, but try and make your posts slightly friendlier (sp)

oh i know this going back a couple of pages hehe but i agree kids should get into wildlife - i loved it when i was little we used to have frogs in our garden it was brilliant and when i went to my grans i used to collect bugs from under rocks and make a little setup for them i used to love it i would keep them for a couple of days and release them in the same place as i got them from. best time of my life =D!

If you put in a really strong UV bulb 10.0+ or a megaray then there is a theory that it may affect the eyes of more sensitive species. I'm not sure this is any more than anecdotal evidence and conjecture! The full sun is much stronger than any bulb!

A 2.0 or even a 5.0 bulb, is not going to do any harm at all, and some people think it improves the activity and life of their reps.

Whilst I dont agree with the guy's use of language, there was still no need to but into his ad like that

With regards to UV lighting, as far as I was aware there are no problems using it, or am I completely barking mad?

Yes you are correct to say they dont need it, but there is nothing wrong with using it for display purposes. At the end of the day, in the wild there would be UV emitted from the sun during the day, which is far stronger than any bulb we can produce, you dont see it damaging wild Royals

Its almost always the girls that are the bravest, yer basic knuckle dragging hardnut is usually the first one to back away.

But it also annoys me how some people discourage kids from keeping snakes, frogs and so on,,,,come on,how many of use used to pond dip tadpoles as kids and keep them in jamjars....never did us any harm...and the kids that wanna do it are discouraged and the other half dont care about our own wildlife but just want HET this and 66% that
I spent most of my childhood up to my neck in smelly old ponds looking for just about anything that moved, god knows how many "creepy crawlies" I inflicted on the family and my poor old gran who nearly had a heart attack when the bits of lace in the bath wriggled when she picked them up, well a boy has to put his newts somewhere. Truth be known Im not that much better now, I still try to look at animals with a childs eyes and can get excited over what could seen as trivial, like catching a glimpse of a frog hopping away. I think the day i lose that feeling is the day I give up keeping animals.
P.S. my kids are just as bad but I could admit to a small amount of encouragement on my part, Ive lost count of the joint rollockings weve got from coming home covered in mud.

Crickey I wouldnt buy it if it was me, the snake doesnt require uv, its a royal he needs to be in the dark not in the light, royals tend to hide during the day & come out as & when if food passes them by. Ah well glad I dont use uv for my royals.

And no I wasnt nosing around im into royals already have a fair lot. So how is looking at an ad being nosey
They may not require UV but it does not affect them either way as long as it is not on 24/7 so I do not blame the bloke for acting as he did.
