Default Advice?

Hello everyone,
Since being on the forum I've grown rather fond of corn snakes my neighbour had two hatchlings and I cared for them for a weekend which I really enjoyed I've handled them but I was very nervous. I like corn snakes but I’m nervous around them I’d love to own a corn one day anyone got any advice on getting over my fear?

I've only handled hatchlings and I enjoyed the experience even though I was scared I've watched someone feed them which made me jump My main fear is getting bitten or doing something wrong so any advice would be great thanks

(I'm going to do plenty of research and try to hold an adult before even considering to acutally buy a corn.)

Hi duck , im the same got a really curious fascination with snakes but scared of them at the same time! unfortunatly for me my 14 year old son is obsessed with them and ive told him he can have one (after a year of him nagging) hes saving up the money himself for equipment etc... and has done a two week work placement working with them so ive had to cave in and say he can have one!

Ive got a lot more interested in them since coming on here and im making myself watch videos of them feeding etc on you tube cos it makes me feel quesy!

Im hoping that by researching them i can lose some of the fear i have so that when my son gets his i can actually sleep at night with it in the house!!

Hes going to have to have a baby one so that i can get used to it as it grows!

Im excited about it but freaked out all at the same time!

The best way to get over your fears is to have a chat with someone who has adult corns.

I know there are loads of people like me who do open houses and let people handle their snakes.

A lot of snake keepers who have had snakes for years and years have never been bitten. One of my corns used to bite me when it was a baby, but it soon grew out of that and it never hurt nor did it make me bleed... As an adult snake it is really placid and i have no problems allowing Mr. Bitey to be used for shows with children etc.

When snakes strike feed - most people will always jump a little - thats part of the fun!

Good luck

i would say that you would be best to start off with a hatchling corn as you have already handled one . also as you will be with iyt all the time you wont really notice how fast they grow and would have built up plenty of confidence before they are big. corns are a great first snake. on the info side i would search on google plenty of info on there also ask as many questions on here as you like as that is what the forum is here for hopw this helps

I was also scared of snakes 10 years ago but I was also facinated by them so I went and got a corn and a CRB and it got me over the fear and I have enjoyed keeping ever since.

if you are wary of them you would probably be better looking for a tame yearling. All hatchlings can be, fast, nervous, and defensive. Normally by 12 months of age they have grown out of this and are much more calm to handle
