The risk of impaction is practically non-existant according to most people, and the second part, a snake with a highly tuned sense of smell can immediately teel the difference between a hand with a 6ft tall person behind it, and a rat/mouse. I've never been tagged with an "eating" bite

I feed my lad out of his viv - use the small rub to weigh him first then give him his fluff. Then just put the rub into his viv and he goes straight to his warm hide. Also avoids him ingesting Aspen bedding.
He's so far fed every week since I've had him and is quite happy being fed out of his viv.

Also feeding in the viv doesn't mean that the snake will automatically think that food is on the cards, its more likely that they will initially think cleaning / changing water is on the cards (because this happens with greater frequency) unless the scent of rats is in the air... I for one wouldn't like to move my retics or boas about when they are about to / have just eat(en) now that is asking for trouble IMO! My Royal just wouldn't eat if I moved her out of her RUB, so that's where she stays...

i used to feed him in the rub, but the last few feeds have been in his old rub - simply as he was a bit nervy in his new rub, almost expecting feeds all the time.
it makes it a tad easier as i have to move things around to feed him in the rub. i've only fed him three (maybe 4) times out of the rub and the last one he knew what was coming before i'd even entered the room with food and he sat, poised, looking at the lid, just waiting for the magical mouse from the sky to appear.

The person asked a question so I gave an answer, I feed all my snakes in their vivs/RUBs and have only ever been bitten once when feeding by a royal because I didn't warm the rat first and she "saw" my hand and smelled rat. |
