All my Royals are on newspaper, it doesn't look nice but it is easy to clean up after them & it's cheap . Also means i can feed them all in their RUBs/vivs without fear of them getting an impaction from swallowing any substrate .

calci sand is terrible stuff. Royals live in grassy and lighty wooded areas generally, they are not desert snakes.

If you want a natural looking substrate go for something like orchid bark, royals also need a decent amount of humidity to be able ot shed properly, sand certainly wont be helping with that.

he is in shed ive got two water dishes and have put a mulch hide in there humidity is around 70 75 but wen not in shed 50 to 60 and i am switching the substrate as soon as possible

I myself use Orchid bark, would never use anything different for our snakes.

Orchid bark is cool as long as you bake it or freeze it, due to the fact it contains more creepy cralwies than a prostitutes under crackers.
