Nope not rude at all in fact quite the opposite, if I was rude then I apologise however unless any advice is given by a qualified person then it can only be considered an amatuer guess or amatuer statement.

I have been bought up with Landrovers from an early age, I know just about all there is to know about them, I build them to compete in but it doesn't make me anything other than an amatuer enthusiast and thats nearly 40yrs experience.

We are afterall people that keep pets some may have a business based around them but the majority don't and therefore by definition we are amatuers but hey why not find a word in the last two paragraphs so the mob can hang me......

no one is claiming to be a vet (well i am not anyway) but the way you come across seemed rude in my opinion...as has been said, some people on here have more know how when it comes to sick snakes than most reptile vets i have seen! it just came across rather arrogant the way you worded it...and it sounds like someone has a bit of a chip n their shoulder to me, especially in the last part of the second paragraph...maybe its me? aaaaaanyway, back on topic! is Rach going to get on here and explain what is the problem with this poor chap/chapette?

I for one welcome threads like this, if I ever have a problem like this I will be hunting for the thread on the forum.

I've already hunted up several posts from past months to help with questions that hadn't needed answers at the time.

Agreed, also my vet (yes that's a proffesional person) rings me up (an amatuer) when he gets reptile problems he can't deal with because he knows that even if I don't know the answer straight away I normally know a person or a post on here that can help.

Just for the record an amatuer is some one that does something out of interest as against a proffesional that does something for money.

Both can have high levels of expertise and even qualifications in the chosen subject.

Putting the "Who's got the bigger testicles" argument aside, sharing information like this is very important in the keeping of any animal. If we left everything to vets, who have very minimal training in exotic animals and nearly none in reptiles (unless they choose to make a specialisation and take on further training that is) then noone is going to benefit. It's the first interesting thread on here in weeks and people are getting shot down for not being qualified enough to discuss a photograph? Come on now!

I like threads like this, means you know better in the future what to look for.

Oh, and please, just ignore the trolls in the future, saves clogging threads with banter when they are informative

There are many people on this forum that are in the veterinary profession, as Vets, Vet Nurses and such.

I for one (even if I'm only just training as a Veterinary Nurse) often get asked by my local vet what I suggest may the issue and plan of action for any reptiles they have in since there are no reptile vets for 70 miles plus in our area and they have very little experience at all.

Their point made to me was that I may know what the issue is if fairly common to us such as RI, MBD and so on. Diagnosis is quicker rather than nights of them researching them selves. They then will know the types of medication and prescription needed. I will agree though, I certainly don't know it all, after all I can only suggest a list of possible prognosis.

No one suggests at all that in cases like this, that only us "amateur" advice people and Rachel is one of the first people to say scream VET at people.

Thank god this is just a thread to get people thinking. Its also interesting to hear from people who have encountered it before.

Oh and for the record... the suggestions here sound good but I didnt have a clue

What I am saying is, not every one is as amateur as you think...

It is believed to be a subspectular abcess. The eye itself is working fine, the vet has given baytril to keep any secondary infections at bay and has given eye drops and fake tears to keep the area moist and I'm due back after it sheds out when hopefully it'll clear up somewhat.

The vet did say these things can be drained but it's a fiddly procedure and he'd rather not do surgery if it can clear up with antibiotics and cleanliness.

The snake is only 3days old so hasn't shed or fed yet so hopefully the hassle of treatment won't hinder him too much.
