depends how the heat mat is placed...if it was inside the enclosure then it could easily slide underneath it and get burned, but as the OP said the mat is off then that cant be the cause....so other than my other suggestion i dont know really....

indeed would of been something i'd noticed when buying but didnt, he has a coconut hide, and that has a slight hole in the top of it, he could have possibly squeezed through that but then i would expect the tear to be at the fattest part of him, not near his tail. and i'm using aspen.

This happened to one of my snakes, she was in a tub and managed to squeeze herself through a tiny gap and escape, taking some scales with her, looks like yours might of gotten stuck somewhere and they scraped off?

My girl was ok, the skin wasn't and after a few sheds she was ok. But keep an eye on him, you dont want him doing whatever he did again.

the only thing in there is his hide and water bowl, so i've taken the hide out as a precaution. other than that i'll just have to keep an eye on him

try just using a cardboard box like an oxo cube box for a hide or similar, or just a loo role centre cut in half

If you put him on kitchen roll instead of aspen for now with as above, simple cardboard hides, then it's easier to monitor what happens.
