What is the problem with refreezing rats? I have arat tonight that my snake hasnt eaten. why can't I refreeze it for a few days? I don';t understand the problem with germs as surely the freezer would kill any germs?

No, freezers dont kill any bacteria, they only slow the growth of them. If you have deofrsted once, it will have a lot of bacteria on it, growing fast again, and if you refreeze, and defrost again, all those bacteria will start to proliferate again: not good!

Basically the same as refreezing your own food, you do not have food frozen then thawed and then frozen again.

Freezing does not kill all germs, when a food item is being thawed this is when bacteria will start to grow and develop. So you are just pausing that process and then doubling the amount again when you next thaw.

For the snake of a couple of quid, I don't see the point.

I assume any part of defrosting enhances the rotting process of any animal.
defrosting the mouse/rat furthers the decomposition of the animal.
A fresh killed and frozen rat will not have enhanced the decomposition but killed/frosted- defrosted/frozen probably wont taste or smell as nice!
Does that make sense??

You mean that freezing splits the cells and enables quicker rotting? I would think so. Again, its the case of the number of bacteria increasing each time: they are not killed, only slowed in their growth.

Made me chuckle too

I wouldnt refreeze any no matter how good they look, just think it may have defrosted once already on the way to the pet shop then when you took it home then when you feed it so that could be three times already. Also not only do you need to worry about bacteria but decomposition of the dead rodent.
