Default help slightly and only slightly confused :-)

ok been reading that using pine shavings for snakes is not advisible due to some kind of toxic resin ? so my question is this ... i have a double vivarium built from pine and varnished... will this be ok for a snake ?

I am hoping the toxins are released in the shavings as they are cut and a varnished piece of pine will be ok ?????? if not then arrrggghhhhhh need to get another viv sorted lol.....

nah.., its pine in general thats bad.. but i do know some people that have used pine vivs for years without problems, they just make sure they varnish the viv inside and out every year... still not something i would do personally..

I think it may be more of an issue if the pine is injested by the snake. This is obviously a real possibility if you are using a pine shavings substrate but the snake isn't going to bite a chunk out of the viv .

Best thing to do, of course, is avoid pine all together. But I wouldn't be overly concerned about a pine viv, especially if the pine has been coated.

i suppose if it is completely sealed it SHOULD be OK but obviously no guarantees.

i wouldn't do it myself, and i doubt you will find many experienced keepers who would do it. not worth the risk IMO.

its the sap thats bad so I was told when I asked before, and pine furniture isnt going to have sap oozing from it, if its varnished I dont see a problem at all.
