When I went to San Diego zoo they had an adult two headed cali king in their reptile house. Was totally amazing to watch as it was pretty active. About the first three or four inches were split so the heads could look in different directions and go round/over/under the other, but they didn't have enough slack to be able to bite each other. Spent about half an hour watching them to try to figure out whether only one head got to choose their direction but couldn't tell.
Freaky but interesting too, I have a similar piccy in a book about corns. The heads are split much higher up though, so they sit side by side. It looks like they cant move away from each other. the book calls them bicephalic. It doesn't really say why it happens though, but it's on a page talking about inbreading.
I read somewhere that high incubation temperatures, well above of what they should be, are the cause of this "mutation".
One interesting fact is that the two heads compete for food ... kinda freaky if you ask me.
