Default Red Crab?

hi i went in to a local aquatic shop yesturday and came accross 2 tanks of small red crabs, and thats what the label had them called, Red Crabs, they were about 2-4cm big, most of them were fully submerged yet a few bigger were out and about, on logs and floating docks, i cant remember what parts were red, but i know their pincers were deffinately.

they were priced up at £2-3 each i cant remember the exact price

had been thinking about getting some land crabs for a while now, rainbow, hermit or similar but after seeing these i think i might get a small community tank, about 5, hopefully more females than the males.

if anyone can let me know their scientific name or any info on them, would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

they were probably Sesarma bidens-red clawed crabs, red crabs, tropical crabs, thai crabs, the list goes on. If they were they are more brackish water than tropical. They prob wont last long in a tropical tank. If they were these then breeding is practicly a no no as the hatchlings are basicly plankton and need very specalized water and very very small food.

Try here for a few detail-and check the pics for reference.

I think the best are land hermit crabs. Get 5 or more of those and you wont be disappointed. Especially not if you get big ones and a nice set-up. They will keep you entertained for hours on end. Trust me.

Hi i currently have a Rainbow crabs, my set-up is 50/50 land and water now very friendly lets me hold them and comes out when feeding.
Anyway just to let you know you need a very big tank to house a few together as they become terroitoral as they get bigger, i had two together i had to move into seperate tanks as one was missing a few legs. Which he has currently grown back through molting.
Eventually you need to create more land as as they reach adult hood they spend more time digging in sand/mud on the edges of water.
Great pets to have as they enjoy basking in the light, just to stress they arent the types of pets to have if you want to handle.

I also have hermit crabs i have a large set-up, eco-earth twice the size of my largest, 80% humidity. At the moment hermit crabs are very hard to come by, although there is sites that post them if your willing to risk. My largest jack enjoys eating out of my hand and being petted.

Anyway hope that helps to make your choice

P.s just checked internet for you there is a site called absolutely crabulous that sells hermit crab stuff and has there own forum aswell, its also advertised on here

i was personally thinkin of around a 2.5/3ft glass tank, 50/50 set up, divide in the middle just so that the land can be more like a beach with a shallow incline than an enbankment with a steep incline, and some live plants, some bog wood to hide under etc.

i wasnt going to house them in a community fish tank, but on their own, maybe 3-5 red crabs, i understand that brakish water is salt water in a sense, would get proper stuff not table salt

would have a filter, basking light just give off enough heat, 15-20watt bulb as i also heard they sometimes bask on the sand, also need UVB tube?
