I think as long as you dry it throughly, to leave no solvent traces behind, wash it a lil, you'd be fine..mantis are non crawling pets, they won't be like snails that could suck up toxic chemicals from a painted surface by dragging themselves on it
just my idea though
edit: as a rule of thumb, if something 'smells', like 'smells of plastic' (not something you'd like in your water :P) etc., it means that potentially harming particles are leaching from it, otherwise your nose won't notice the smell!
