Elbow grease.

You need a chemical of some sorts to remove it. Fairy liquid works well, or white spirit. If you don't want to use chemicals, then warm water and lots of rubbing removes it.

I'm not sure you can get that sticky stuff off without chemicals for glass you can use meths or white spirit. just wash very thoroughly afterwards with water to make sure there no residue left as these substances would almost certainly be toxic to inverts.

On a plastic tank, you're stuffed. I tried white spirit once and it cracked the plastic!

I had horrible sticky residue from double sided tape on a glass tank after unsticking a heatmat and I found the easiest way to do this without any smears or chemicals is to use a sharp stanley/craft knife blade. Take the blade out of the knife and, holding it very flat against the glass, scrape the residue off.

Worked like a charm when I did it, didn't scratch the glass and got everything clean off. It did need a bit of force to do the job though so obviously you have to be very careful with your fingers etc.!

Maybe heat it with a hairdryer before scraping off?

I use nail varnish remover then rinse well with warm water & fairy then rinse again with just water.

I've been told that liquid lighter fuel is very good for sticky marks but I don't know how safe it is. Suppose if you wash thoroughly afterward it would be OK.
