You need to keep it in a deep tub with at least 8 inches deep of substrate for it to burrow in. Make a starter hole for it and it will give it a good start to a burrow.

That's about all there is to it. Once burrowing has started, add water bowl. Until then, keep the substrate damp (but do not allow surface water to form).

Keep an eye open for mites.

I'm actually considering rehousing my H.albostriatum. Contrary to usual legend with Haplopelma species, this girl's usually quite well behaved. When I first got her, she was a feisty aggressive little... yeah. But when I rehoused her a second time, she was absolutely fine.

hey ph0bia question for you. How long does it usually take for a Haplo to extend it's burrow to the bottom of an enclosure? I have a 12" deep glass enclosure, I started a 2" deep pit in one corner and it as adopted it. It's layed down some surface webbing in the enclosure and sits in the pit with it's legs on the edge, but obviously it isn't that deep. Right now it's on it's four front legs and is making web above itself, like making a roof.

I've had it three days so far. I don't think the sub is too compacted, i just tipped it in and patted down the top slightly, then dug the hole. I didn't add moisture is it was already rather damp(compost out of a close sack), i misted the surface though to make it wet enough to drink and to raise humidity further.

Honestly, both my H.albostriatum (both times) and my H.lividum had hit the bottom of the enclosure within the week.

Sounds fine so far, both of mine did this, then continued. It'll be on top one evening, then when you wake up, you'll never see the spider again

aye I'll look at the photo to remember it lol, all I'll ever see is four leg tips sticking out of a webbed up hole, and possible a spasm of movement or flash of blue as it teleports, if I throw livefood in.
