why I do believe it's never.

They lay their eggs in the sub and within their faeces, the young ones feed on the rotten stuff in the substrate and their parents faeces. Thus me thinks you don't change it.

We only cleaned them in college if they smelt. Did remove the worst of the rotting food.

Keep food on a lid or shallow dish to avoid too much rotting in the soil and you should never have to change it.

what I do is put it on a plate, then remove it after like 4-5 days when it's really bad, though generally it's all gone by then. I have a phorid fly infestation so I am going to have to replace it with more peat moss, luckily i still have a bag of beech leaves in the cupboard. But alas I'll lose the springtails as I want to totally disinfect this thing cos the flies have infested it and my room.

I think I'll get some tropical woodlice next time.
