Default Desert Hairy Scorpion, advice and help needed for a scorpion newb

Hi guys

I am thinking of getting a desert hairy scorpion as my first scorpion. I'm just looking for some guidance as to how to keep them please. Will I need a heat matt and if so will I need to run it off a stat? Please bare with me I have no idea about scorpions lol.

Many thanks

Adam

I had one of these and i kept it on sand which it used to sift about a lot! I used a heat mat with mine under half the tank and it was fine and fed it large locust once a week, also i never gave it water i kept it bone dry which seemed to benefit it. Hope this helps!

Many thanks, did you use a thermostat with the mat or was it small enough wattage to be run without one?

Cheers

Nah no thermostat, put the mat under half the tank and let the scorp decide where he is happy

No you don't put the mat under the tank you idiot, attach mat to the side of tank and run off a thermostat.

OH has one of these, we kept her on gravel for a while. She is now named "the gravel flicker" as all she used to do was fling the gravel everywhere. They do love re-arranging substrate!

My rep shop said I could put the scorpion on top of one of my snakes vivs and this would give it sufficient heat, is this correct?

Cheers

Use coconut fibre as a substrate (ensure it dries out) so it can build a home, don't just provide 100% sand because it will hopelessly dig and dig while it tries to construct a burrow for the rest of its life. Pure sand isn't a good substrate for a heavy burrowing species like a desert hairy because it doesn't pack together.
