How do you know they form the distinction between living and dead?

A dead cricket waggled about artfully might just seem like a living one.

As for carrion, it's likely to be a mix of chemosensory cues as suggested. I've yet to actually see any of my spiders eat dead prey yet however, so I can't suggest anything else.

ah kk, i kill crickets when feeding to slings because of the risks and the slings recognise them as food even though they just sit there, its strange
