Isn't Irish peat a bit of a no no these days, habitat destruction or over harvesting of it? I just use wilkos organic compost now, bulked out with coir if I run low. Sometimes mixed with gravel if I'm letting it dry out for dry species. Seems to work a treat.
Light shouldn`t make any difference to fungus growing as it doesn`t use light for photosynthesis. Coir should be fairly sterile though.

I always thought that but they only grew where light hit the tank, nowhere else and I couldn't stop then no matter how many I pulled out. It was odd right enough.

See how educational this forum is. I Googled "do mushrooms need light?" and this is what came up Why do mushrooms not need light to grow

Thanks Kris for that.......but don`t tell your mates that you are teaching a mackem. Cheers Steve.

No worries man!

I was just asking someone the other day whether or not mushrooms are beneficial to us or are they just things we eat for the hell of it. According to that article the button mushroom can contain all the vitamin D we need in a day.

Every day's a school day mate..

Probably not.
I've had more mushrooms growing in 100% coir than in any other substrate or mixes of substrates.

In 100% coir

In pure top soil
