Angry Vets

Don't you just hate it when you go to a vet, and they have the audacity to charge you for a consultation when they basically repeat back to you what you tell them. You go there looking for answers, offer your thoughts, and they just agree with you, and charge you.

i see what your saying, but im sure you would be saying something very different if they told you your pet had a life threatening ilness, and they could save it, its one of the things about vets, as with everything, theres good and bad

Actually, what I really hate is when the vet has no idea what the animal is (as with a legless lizard I had to leave with them for minor surgery once), fishes for information about it, then when you try to explain their basic care requirements and physiological differences between them and the snakes they're used to, cuts you off and tries to act all knowing and patronising.

They kept my temperate lizard far too hot, on an unregulated heat mat for over 24 hours. He's never been the same since. After botching the operation, which was to have the end of his tail removed, the vet made comments about how he hadn't expected the the tail to be so tough and rigid after he cut the end off and didn't know what to do about it because he'd expected it to be all soft and squishy so he could sew it up like a leo tail. If he'd listened to me in the first place, he'd have known that in advance because I kept trying to tell him useful things like that but he wouldn't listen. To this day, the wound has never healed properly.

The moral of the story... A vet that listens to you, acknowledges your knowledge of your specialist pet and confirms your opinions if they are correct is actually doing a fairly good job. If a vet doesn't know the specifics of an unusual species you take in, the best thing they can do is acknowledge that and listen to your input. It's much better than ignoring you and pretending they know more than they do to try to create an illusion of confidence. I'd much rather they tell the truth and agree than just make something up to appear knowledgable.

We tend to treat a lot of minor ailemts ourselves nowadays but sometimes you really do need a vets professional opinion or their surgical skill. What was actually wrong with your critter?

To be fair to Vets they're never going to 'learn it all' in 5 yrs of veterinary school.

Fortunately my vet's clinical skill / knowledge is excellent but the less said the better about his nasty habit of selling me totally unnecessary treatments in addition to the ones that were needed. He's also very, very rude.

I love my vet. If he doesn't have to do anything other than look the animal over and give a bit of advice/tip then he doesn't charge me (or at least there's been no charge on my last 2 visits anyhow)

I always find this a difficult one because I've seen it from both sides of the fence. I've worked in veterinary surgeries and still want to do vet medicine when I finish my current degree but I'm also a VERY poor student. My father refused to take my elderly rabbit to the vets to either have it put down or given antibiotics - it was around 10 so the odds of it recovering weren't good but he hates vets because he thinks they're all out for money. This simply isn't true. A lot of vets really aren't making much money - my best friend at uni for example; both her parents are vets and own a practice but can't afford to help their daughter at all with university because they don't bring enough in after tax and expenses. I know it seems like a rip-off to us when 10 mins has cost us £30+ but there is a good reason for it. That said of course your vet should admit if they don't know anything about your animal just like you expect your doctor to say if he doesn't know what's wrong with you.

I took Boaie to the vet and the vet pretty much blamed me for his condition which to me is like a doctor blaming me for been sick,
any once else feel this way?
