I believe that any commercial enterprise must be backed by a transportation license, which can be obtained for free from Defra. Any guidelines for transporting are no doubt outlined by them

No probs sparkle, what would you like to know?

I can let you know because I arrange the coach trips, so have spent lots of time looking into it and still have the communications from Animal health dept, and from Russell in the welfare in transport team inparticular.

I am also licenced to carry livestock on a type 2 licence

In addition I am on the committee of a local society and am thier welfare officer, so all in all am pretty well placed to help you.

There are many different types of situation that do have different laws and conditions and guidelines, so as I dont feel up to writing a novel on the subjuct, if you can be more specific, I am only to happy to supply good honest hard facts for you.

Ok, it depends on the reasons, if you or any of the people intend on buying animals that will then be resold, irrispective of profit or loss, then it is a commercial activity, and as such will need to be licensed to carry livestock, and it would need to be a stage 2 license as hamm to scotland is more than 8 hours.

It would also need to be declared at customs so that any duty due can be paid.

Now, if they are only buying for thier own hobby needs, and the transport is primarly for the transport of the passengers, and the animals are simply 'goods' that have been brought by the passengers, then the transport is outside the scope of transportation regulation. Welfare issues are the only thing you will need to observe, ie ensuring the animals are fit for travel, are transported in suitable containers, and in suitable location in the transport.

Now thats general, in detail, you will also need to ensure that the animals are not subject to restriction, and if they are, that you meet the requirements to bring them back into the country.

For example, CITES 1 need artical 10s, CITES 2 need documents to show they are CB and not taken from the wild. EPS also plays a part, and you need to ensure any species you get that are covered anywhere within the EU.

Of course DWA has its own needs, but you dont need any special documents over and above the ones listed above if you are simply transporting them. Of course you will need the DWA if you intend to keep them.

So, in short, if you and your friends go out to buy animals for your collection, you need to check if they are on CITES and comply with that, and take reasonable care with the animals welfare.

Of course, I would recomend you confirm all this as I may not actually know what I am talking about, and as such provide the above info without qualifcation and as a lay person.

Hope that helps

Tony

thats actually really helpful thanks

none of the animals would be sold for profit.. and the car wil be used for passengers mainly

and none would be DWA

so its the welfare issue and the cites issue i need to concentrate on

i have plenty of time luckily before next year then

once again thats great info thanks
