I'm planning to open a reptile shop within the next 6 months, I have nearly finished a business plan, been to look at the area i'm planning to set up in and the kinds of premisis avaliable, been on day courses designed to help people start up a new business and do book keeping, just about to enrol on the petshop management course and have a fair bit of research ideas.

Is there anyone on these forums that has started up their own reptile shop that would be willing to answer a few questions and share some tips? Things such as how long it takes to be granted a licence, maybe a little about supplies etc

I'm not planning to set up near any existing reptile places (The nearest ones are 15 mins away in 2 directions, and 45 mins in the other two) and promise not to take up all of your time

me and my wife have been thinking of doing the same as there is no one that specialises in reptiles ie a shop that is in our local town centre only pet shops with the odd reptile in even they dont know what they are doing how do you enrol on the petshop managment course and how much is it any idea where it is based or would there be 1 in the local area or not any info you get would you please share it with me cheers i am also looking at importing reptiles so i am just surfing net to find this out where abouts are you looking at opening a shop i live in rotherham so thats where i would open 1

i've been looking into importing reptiles aswell and its a slow loooong process... best thing to do if you're starting up a shop is to look for breeders and them try importing... well tahts what i think

I am doing the same.........I have been working on it for around 6 months so far, my website will be done with in a month.

I am looking at premises next week.......

Once you have your license and your premises it should be easy from there but However much you budgeted to do it...double it!!!

It is proving to be far morre expensive than I ever thought it would be...just be aware of that

How long does it take to be granted a licence from applying for one? Do you need the licence to keep the animals in the shop, or for selling them?
i.e. could you have Vivs fitted and keep your own breeding stock in them without a licence?

Congrats on finding premesis Paulibabes!! shouldn't be too much longer for you now then. Are you doing it as a sole trader, partnership or LTD company? I've been told LTD is better if there are more than one of you doing it.

I know its a bit of a cheeky question, do people start with big savings or with a bank loan/family help etc? I'm using a bit of each, and making sure I personaly have no debts before I start. I was wandering because I want to start sooner rather than later (which means less savings) but have been told that for some types of business, starting with mostly a bank loan means less success.

I've been doing business and book keeping short courses and have some very good spreadsheets for book keeping and info on starting a business I could email/post to people if they want anything?

hi hope everyone gets on ok and gets there shops i was taking to my wife about opening a shop today but she thinks getting into importing first would be best or buying and selling from home for abit but need to look in to it any ideas on it or advise
