Default Western Hognoses.

Hi Everyone,

I hope this isnt a stupid question, but can male/female hognoses live together happily in the same vivarium?
Im thinking of getting my male a girlfriend, but dont want to cause problems if they wont get on.

Has anyone got any advice.

Cheers.

There isn't a problem providing they are both full grown adults, as they will mate like rabbits!! Be aware though that sometimes the males totally go off food when a female is around. They will also need to be separated for feeding.

HI all,

Keep them in separate RUB's, if you keep youngsters together it is possible for the female to breed before she is ready, and this can cause all sorts of problems and could end in the females death.

As adults if kept together all they will do is try to breed all the time this again will do the female no good, she needs time after mating to regain weight lost while gravid, they are not machines.

Keep in separate RUB's and put them together when they are ready to breed.

Lets not forget either that the male is a lot smaller than the female even when fully grown, which has been the demise of some poor males when the female decided they would be a tasty snack.

really? hognoses do not eat snakes, so very unlikely they would eat a male in the same viv. It is a risk, though if they are fed together, not because the female has decided cannabalism is the way forward, but because they have both tried to eat the same mouse, with inevitable disaster.

I would say that it's not a good idea.

When we pair our hognoses up they mate and mate and mate and mate and mate (etc) almost continuously, everytime you check on the tub they are locked up.

The poor male would never eat and the female wouldn't appreciate all the attention (nb for those who havew never bred hoggies, males tend to hold females still...with their teeth.)

Basically no.
