Default Rspca feeding Of a royal python

RSPCA || Pet care

I followed this link on another thread and decided out of sheer nosey-ness to look at the guidelines for feeding a royal python.. they do have several other species of reptiles with care sheets but i havent got round to trawling through them yet...

so heres their basic suggestion for feeding a royal...

it suggests 2 to 4 mice per week.. the article does not say at what age or weight this is a suitable regime and the reader ( if not experienced) would be left thinking this is long term into adulthood etc.. or am i being too picky with the rspca.. maybe their other care sheets are perfect I wil need to go and read some more... i was shicked that they even had a section for how to care for reptiles at the very least it seems contradictory in the extreme to their position that NO rep should be kept as a pet...

i havent had the chance to read their other care sheets but if that one is anything to go by its quite worrying although no surprise..

the last i heard from a friend of mine they had a newt in a leo gecko style set up... luckily only for a few hours till they were promptly corrected.

2-4 mice sounds excessive for what is after all a small python - maybe they were getting muddled up with a boa or Burmese?

I think it is good in principle that they are putting up caresheets, but if the sheets are wrong then they need to change them very quickly.

they do try and cover their backs. At the bottom of the care sheets (pdf's) it says in big letters that its a basic guide and you should research fully before buying.
If they have to tell you to do more research than reading a care sheet that they put together then there's no point them doing a care sheet as they've obviously not researched it enough themselves.

Had this argument with the RSPCA on the leo care sheet as it recomends calci sand blah blah
Forwarded all my replies on to Rory and still havent had any joy with trying to convince the RSPCA to remove it from the care sheets.

oooo right maybe if more people can write then... they do seem really stupid with some of their info... sigh..

is it possible to work through them all and see what mistakes and pointers we can make and draft a complete letter to make available for people to download and sign.,.

or are we pissing in the wind once again

Bad information, why put down 'do more research'? why don't they just get the information right in the first place? I'm sure some people on RFUK would assist in creating care sheets with the right information.......There again its the RSPCA, it's all about charity shops, their takings & hassling owners that have done nothing wrong.
