Default Where did it all start for you?

....this is where it all started for me. I was 7 yrs old and we were in Tunisia in the early 1970's (don't y' just LOVE that cool outfit!). I just wandered off away from my mum and dad to see this guy with a Cobra (yes...really). My mum looked up, and there I was with the thing around my neck!! I wanted a snake ever since.... (Mum and dad wouldn't let me have one when I lived at home. ) The same holiday, I nearly gave my dad a fit, by poking at a black scorpion on the floor in a market!...I KNOW NO FEAR!

I was a total tomboy.
(Still am, but I wear frocks and make up now too. )

It was the 1970's. People in the middle of nowhere in N Africa, were hardly worried about health and safety!

I have no idea, why I was interested in snakes, but a few years back I visited my mums doctors with her, and the receptionist asked me if I had any snakes. I said yes and said "why?" a bit puzzled that someone I didn't know was asking me out of the blue if I had snakes. She replied that she used to be my playschool teacher and when I was 3/4 years old, I would say to everyone at playschool "I'm Amanda and when I grow up I'm going to have pet snakes".

I honestly have to idea as to what attracted me to them at that age, but I can remember from about 9/10 years old, asking my parents every year when asked what I wanted for my birthday/christmas that I wanted a snake. I didn't get one until I was 22 years old in the end.

I lived in a small town until I was 20, always liked alternative pets, ALWAYS wanted a parrot growing up.. but settled for breeding hamsters for a few years when I was about 10. Wasn't really allowed anything "weird", just the usual fish, cats and dogs and didnt really come into contact with any reptiles.
Moved to Birmingham and one of the first places my OH took me was the Reptile shop as he knew I wanted a lizard.. Came home with a couple of beardies and that's where it started.. over the next 18 months the collection grew and I had over 20.

I remember buying a book on snakes and how to keep them. I fell in love with a normal looking corn in front of a bright blue background. It went no further from there. Then i moved out of home and in with a severe asthmatic. We really wanted a pet and already had fish so we bought an iguana which fell in to trouble due to poor or wrong advise on how to keep it. We were directed to a specialist local to us and although we resolved the care and living arrangements the iggy died so she helped and set us up with a beardie which lived well in to retirement and well been going since the beardie.

when i was about 7 my parents got me a snake, i had no idea how to care for it, my parents only went on what they were told by the shop. It was kept in a small glass tank, no hides, kept on paper (i think), an unprotected normal light bulb, no stat, no thermometer and so on. Was told to feed it worms. Needless to say the poor bugger died not long later. I have always been an animal lover. But a couple years ago i was just sitting around, can't remember what triggered it, but thought i'd like to get a reptile and do the right thing for it! So i did.
