Angry Prices of an Indonesian Importer

Preise - Reptilienportal Forum

Prices are given in US$,1 US$=£0.60-0.70
I put this link here not to make people rush for ordering to the importer, but to show you how much reptiles are paid by pet shops and why some of the pet shops don't give a damn about dead reps or storing them in overcrowded and unadapted enclosures.
Professionals clearly make more money out of these WC animals, thus encouraging mass imports from the wild, instead of safe, healthy CB animals as regards some species.
For my own point of view,a small, reasonable import is necessary for the hobby,to renew bloodlines or ,in the hands of skillful and experienced breeders,to make poorly-known species being bred in captivity.
But paying 50p. for a gecko and reselling them to any kid in the neighbourhood with no real herp knowledge is certainly not the kind of thing I would go for.
Prices listed here are for Europe and the US,so taxes and customs fees are already included.
More, one may wonder how much indigenous hunters of the mentionned species are paid-Boiga dendrophila is a venomous, dangerous snake...the price of a reptile life is low,but in some countries, the price of human life and labour is low too.

more shocking is the fact that some of the beetles cost more than many of the lizards!!!

This is because some beetles species are really popular in Japan, the demand is huge and Japanese people pay crazy prices for them.

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't importers in the UK have to have licensing & paperwork to import (and i'm talking about importing anything now - not specifically reptiles) from Asia - and also arent there higher taxes and fees associated with doing so?

I know you do need to fill in specific forms and file things if you are going to import for your business from Asia and that there are fees associated with doing so. It's not like just anyone could go ahead and order..

Doesn't really excuse the prices but it is something to consider.

You also have to make larger orders and have to have warehouses - and I can only assume that warehouses to facilitiate imported reptiles must be vetted or licensed in some way?

The minimum order required on there is 1000$ which isn't much more than £600 if that. The people on that forum are talking about the wc issues same as we do on here funnily enough!. One guy says he knows about these cheap Malaysian/Indo imports and that a good third of the animals will die between being caught and exported. Just goes to show some people will do anything for money even if its dealing in animals they know are going to die.

Just noticed the date on that list its from over 6 years ago! It is amazing how some things on that list compared to some on the classified have over 200% markup. Not a bad little earner.
