Default reptiles stores -money?

Hi, I have been after setting up a reptile store for a while and have decided i want to start saving for the setup to make a go of it.

The problem im having is the question of money. Speeking to differeent shop owners i get mixed responses as to whether there is enough money in this to make a living? My other half is worried that it doesnt.

My heart is set, and i want to do this. Please give me some advice/guidance on anything you think i may find usefull - and be honest! PM me if you'd prefer, thanks!

It all depends on your experience of running a business. It basically comes down to can you purchase in things as cheap as possible ie good relationship with suppliers or breed own stock and then sell it on for as much as possible, while not alienating your customers.

Repeat trade is what its all about, keen hobbyists that come in every few weeks and make a significant purchase whether its new livestock or set up upgrade. Is your area liable to have people like this?

Whats the competition like? Their prices? Reputation?

Then theres the choice of what stock to sell. Yes one high morph royal might fetch a few £1000 but the market for these is very low, especially in the current economic climate. Livefoods, usable goods such as bulbs and basic set ups with basic animal eg leopard geckos, corn snakes etc will be the staple of your business.

In the end owning a reptile shop is basically like any other retail business except with the added responsibility of the stock needing time and money being cared for.
