Default HELP of others

Hopefully, im not going to rant to much

But ive noticed recently alot of "my way or your wrong" mentality on here, i help newbies as many many others do on here, but im just concerned to how the advice is going

Thre seems to be a bad case of chinese whispers, in an example

The recognised fact is that "hatchling/young corns can potentially eat cage mates" usually due to feeding response/scent of prey, i have seen then written more recently as "they WILL eat each other", to most recently "CORNS ARE CANABALISTIC" , if you look back over the threads you can see this happening, stage by stage, obviously its easier and reduced RISK to keep them seperate, the same with the potential risk of early mating/raping by young males, but some of the responses are a bit "My way or you are wrong"

Ive seen similar things happen with the viv or rack situation, as with the ceramic or heat mat issues, both of which have pro's and con's

With the whole talk/threat of the AWB situation, surely were here to help one another and not to stamp our own practices on others as "the only way", surely its about advice and not bullying people into a certain way of doing things

Yeah, there are certain things that should and shouldn't be done, but in many cases, there are more than ONE way of keeping things, the pro's and con's should be pointed out as opposed to lecturing people on the "ONE TRUE WAY"

Lets work together peeps

maybe im the only one who thinks this, but rant over

I agree completely... there are facts that should be given when helping others, but much of the rest of our advise is opinion, and it should be put across as an opinion... the reader can take into account all the opinions of people and form their own decision responsibly... and its not our place to berate them or make them feel bad about that.

The only problem with the corn snakes together thing is people do get upset when they think of animals dying because people make the wrong decisions.... so things get heated and emotional.. it's only because people care about the reptiles though.

But I have noticed a sort of "bandwagon" trend a little where someone has a strong opinion, and it's voiced multiple times.. and newer/less experienced members will jump on the bandwagon and start following trend. I've been told that keeping adult corns together means they're going to eat each other, that selling a tortoise makes me evil, that using heat mats instead of ceramics will result in burns and death for all of my animals... by people who don't really even know WHY they're saying the things they are.. just someone else told them it was true.

I strongly suspect people are being scared off by the attitudes of some people.. like the person who asked honestly whether she could keep 2 corn snakes in together.. and if not.. what reptile was suitable for a school tank.. and ended up with 10+ pages of ranting and arguments about corn cannibalism that most of us have read so many times before.

Thats the point though, you can only really give your opinion/advice with the pro's and cons. There is not a "100% only" way of keeping a certain species and different people do things in a different way, obviuousy there are cvertain things that need to be done, but peoples methods vary on how this is achieved, doesn't make it right or wrong in many cases

phew, its not just me then

yeah. ive seen one example with corns of a newbie or two asking a question getting the correct "advice on a certain potential way/view" from an experienced keeper, then that same newbie/newbies telling a new member/other newbie a watered down version as "fact" and "the only way" and in quite an aggressive manner too

ive noticed some folk try and put the fear of god into some newbies..and ive seen the "newbie" immediatly change their mind about what snake/lizard they will get because of the fear that has been installed in them.the whole corn snake thing did go over the top.i was accused of forcing my opinion just by saying how i sexed beardies.

I like this forum because if you need help or advice it is available but like everything else in life people have different opinions, I think the main thing is we all love our reptiles and want to do what's best for them

There is some really crappy advice given out here sometimes, and I think in orderto overturn some of this some people need to come across bluntly.
In some cases there is only one safe way to keep (ie keeping juvinile corns together, keeping them seperate is not a reduced risk, there is no risk, keeping them together there is a risk, not using a thermostat, high risk of burns, yet people persistantly come on to threads saying not having stats is ok (not so much reciently thank goodness) and that keeping young corns together is safe)
Having said that some people really do chase around repeating advice, filling up threads with repetitive replys, that does my nut in !

Surely the point on this particular issue is that young corn snakes DO eat each other and it is nothing to do with feeding response or scent of prey. If you read Schulz's rat snake bible or the snakes of USA and Canada by Ernst and Ernst where the diet of all the rat snake species are discussed in depth, you will find documented evidence that reptiles including other snakes make up a percentage of the diet of the juvenile rat snake including the guttatus and obsoletus species. It is basically instinct for the young snake to eat when it's hungry and that includes cage mates. But yeah... 10 pages of the same statement is a bit OTT

Interesting point about the AWB being brought up here too. Under the AWB every keeper of every animal has a duty of care, which I would imagine includes keeping them all away from potential danger which is another reason to not keep them together ?

Its good to know everyones opinions, i still personally wont do more than advise people, even if they do choose to keep their snakes together. I feel its my duty to mention the risks but thats it, its all about opinions

I know of a couple of people over the years who have had thousands of corns over the years, all housed in pairs from hatchlings on-wards with ZERO eaten

Me and nige also know of someone who keeps 6 or 7 corns/black rat and texas rats babies and sub adults all in together with the same thing happening zero eaten, not something i would advise but for the guy in question its worked for almost two decades that i know of

Obviously that will bother some people, others it wont, just my point is, that its opinions rather than fact, some people have seen/had it happen and others haven't, same with heating/lighting/housing, captive bred against captive farmed(more risk of disease and non feeding) etc etc It should really be about letting people know, not treating them like sh*t because they have a different view point or experience

The whole point of this thread was to get everyone on one side, no matter how they choose to keep(within reason) and the mob tactics/flaming, arguing and back biting's just going to make the hobby all the more weak
