Don't listen to them. If your in a position where you can 'get by' on your existing income then use the time to do what you want. At the end of the day your 50, you can do what you like.
If your family are pushing 85 and think having a computer is nuts, then they havn't lived in the 'modern real world' for a VERY VERY long time. Every economy in the world is driven by computers at some, if not every level. My family think I'm nuts for keeping corns. Reptile = not good pet in their books so I proudly annouced that I'm going to breed them. Faces were a picture!!!

Sounds like you've earnt the right to sit back and do what you want in life.. Here you're a nut if you don't have a computer
I think it's hard for some people to see that reptiles are a growing business. No one in my family except my OH and my mum like reptiles.. if I announced I was breeding pedigree show dogs they'd love it... but reptiles? Think I'm crazy! |

i've been keeping emeralds for years. i must be doing something right. i might as well put all that experience to good use and make a few bucks. i know my six foot plus female can have maybe 20 babies. and at $350 each, and my smaller girl can have a good 10-12 babies. if you do the math, that's a chunck of change. then i reinvest the profits back into the project, and within a few years, i could have afford a nice pair of basins. plus my brb's are good, lower end boas. so i think it is all good.

Haha! I love rants ... Go for it Habu - you're always gonna have people telling you you can't do this or why would you wanna do that, it just makes it feel better when you succeed at it. It's just a shame that it's your family.
If you reckon you have the space / time / money / knowledge required go for it, there are too many people in this world who look at what can go wrong. Life is a risk for f***s sake. As for being a man, standing your ground and being assertive in spite of their naysaying may earn yourself much more respect than waiting for their blessing. If you think you can do it then throw yourself into it - what's there to lose? p.s. you can always sell me some emeralds at $200 a piece - that's like £100!! Some shops charge that for adult royals here! |

I understand where you are coming from Habu, we're investing quite heavily at the minute, and very heavily in the next 12-24 months in breeding stock, most people think we have too much money to waste on a hoby, they simply do not see that breeding 2 £300/£1000/£2000 snakes together in the future will give regular baby £300/£1000/£2000 snakes that people will want to buy.
"who would spend that much money on a snake?" "well we did, you don't think all these things would be available if there wasn't a big hobby, lots of people like us?" They think we are mad, we know we won't ever be millionaires, but we will be happy and working with reptiles and other exotics. We don't think for a long time that it will support both of us full time but I should earn enough to make it fine to support Sami. If one day it earns us enough to replace my salary then great, if not at least we will have tried and despite still having to work i'll get every day contact with some amzing herps. Sami is working through some herpetology qualifications right now and is going full time to university soon. We'll be building our racking as soon as sami's uni fees are paid. Apart from being incredibly jelous that Sami is a) getting to go to uni and b) getting to go to uni on a course that caters to a 90%+ under 21 female group. I'm looking forward to things developing.
