Default breeding rats for food for snakes???

just wondered how many people do it today. I bought a rat today to my mums surprise she was nagging me saying no no not yet wait a little while. Whats the easiest way to kills rats for food.
I know it doesn't sound nice, but what ways are there?

I think CO2 is used often but some people prefer a brick to the back of the head
