Arrow Reptile shows in manchester...

Hi

I have noticed the lack of northern reptile shows and was wondering what would be needed to host one. Is there a specific type of licence or permission needed or anything??

Cheers

I have been told time and time again that it is not legal to host an open show... but as Exeter are doing it and were so successfull last year I don't see how it can be totally illegal. I am sure you would have to speak to your local council, but also try talking to the organisers of Exeter as perhaps they can help on the legalities and paperwork side of it.

Certainly a lot of work

Please explain to me how a society like the IHS can have open shows
but when other people try to organise events they are threatened so much that the proposed show is cancelled.
Does not seem fair to me.

Hmmmm perhaps it is time the IHS discovered the North of England and Scotland too then or at least help others to run these shows.

Its pathetic really, if jobsworths cant control it or think they are controlling it then they like to put a stop to it.

A friend and myself are thinking of putting together a small site for local keepers and breeders so we can all meet informally to trade ideas, talk about reptiles and maybe trade/sell a few herps - its sad that we will have to be doing it discreetly just so we dont get threatened with pressure groups and other silly stuff.

The reason the Manchester/Blackpool shows were cancelled is NOT because they were "open" shows... it was because the organisers are business owners and they intended to sell livestock at the show.

The Animal Welfare Bill explicitly forbids business owners from selling livestock at hobbyist shows / Pet fairs -from DEFRA:

Quote:
Because of these two factors, the government is proposing to modernise the law by prohibiting the sale of animals, where this is part of a business, to members of the public at pet fairs.... Those events where there is either no selling of animals to members of the public; or where there is selling of animals but where it is not in the course of a business, such as hobbyists selling excess stock, will continue to take place without the requirement to be licensed.
Hobbyists can sell excess stock at a fair/show, but businesses CANNOT - because pet fairs at this time CANNOT be licensed.

If the shows had gone ahead, this might have gotten hobbyist shows shut down, whether or not they are open to the public.
