Whats the difference between the basic one costing about £30 and the in depth one that costs over £100? What sorts of things do they do or look for in both?

It depends on who you are using and what grade of post morten you have required or your vet felt was neccessary.
An "in house" PM is cheapest and will range from a gross inspection of the body and organs with limited light microscope histology to full histology and bacteriology as indicated. If the animal is sent to a specialist you will also usually be paying a premium for their time and often courier charges on transporting the body appropriately. I recently paid in the region of £270 for a specialist PM including courier services, histology and bacteriology, plus a few additional tests I personally requested. If all I wanted was gross pathology and some light microscope histology I would have performed it myself.
