I had always been interested in animals of all sorts - but that day in the forest in South Shropshire when I saw my first snake.... well it changed my entire life.
I do know that whatever it is that makes some people terrified of snakes manifests itself in an unexpainable fascination in people such as myself. Dogs, cats, cagebirds.... yawn Reptiles & Amphibians...... ![]() |

I used to catch common lizards in my back garden as a5yr old and keep them for a time before they'd disappear and that amazed me and got the ball rolling, since found out my mother used to let them go when i was sleeping. by that time i was in neck deep.
went to college got alittle education on animals, got fulltime work with animals. then realised there wasnt great cash to be earnt, so got a so called professionals job earning good cash to spend on reptile, as i think its more about the lifestyle i lead whilst keeping my various reps, and the creativity that comes through in building enclosures, working out the best husbandry, keeping and breeding-taking it to the next stage rather than keeping single animals,WOW! We can all do that and do away with Captive Farmed animals and the associated issues. All reptiles facinate me, to study/observe/handle/breed/preserve! Ive met some brilliant people along the way too, People who share the same passion for reptiles who have have acheived amazing results with some rare species as wellas the so called common species. |

I held my first snake when I was very young at a wildlife park (it was a corn snake) and loved it!
I got my first exotic for my 12th birthday- A plains garter snake that I named Smaug. The next day we went back and got him a friend- a chequered garter snake, Falcor. Smaug was so much fun. Ok so maybe you can't play fetch with a snake, but little Smaug would chase a finger around his viv! With my Leopard Geckos, I loved the way their front feet were like tiny little hands, they that they sleep like little people, with one arm up next to their head and one down by their side, the way when they are feeding they wiggle the tip of their tails just before they grab the cricket. I had one Leo, Whoops (so named because she never lost her purple stripes and only grew to about 5" and her jaw looked undershot[it wasn't though]), she would curl up and go to sleep every time I had her out. When my boa was a baby he used to go to sleep on my tum if I made him a cave out of my hands. Occasionally he still will go to sleep on me, though I don't handle him much. And it always used to crack me up with the nocturnal arboreal geckos, as soon as the lights went out all you'd hear all night was 'THUD!' 'THUD!' 'THUDTHUD!' of little sticky pads bouncing all over the place. (it is sad thinking of all the pets I've lost. I had Smaug for seven years, came home from work one day to find him lying on his side, he died later that night in my hands) |
