Default Keeping the room warm..

Hi,

Just thought id post a thread before i buy anything....

Right, i live in an old house and the part of the house i live in has poor insulation in the roof so my room is either freezing cold ( in winter) or boiling hot (in summer lol) Im slightly worried about how cold the temperatures can be sometimes when i get in from work/college i always close the door in the morning, sometimes its been opened in the day by the cleaner so some heat get out that way or cold gets in..my main question though is -

Does anyone have a small oil type heater or alternative to keep their 'reptile room' or room with the reptiles in at a set temp.. ideally i wouldnt want my room to drop below 75-80oF ... does anyone know of a small heater i can buy that has an on off kind of thermostat built into it so when it drops below 75-80oF the heating will come on but wont go over say 90oF?

Any help will be much appreciated!

Cheers,

Scott

As long as you have stats in your vivs and an adequate size mat/bulb/ceramic you shouldnt have a problem heating them. For extra room heat, those plug in oil filled radiators are supposed to be quite economical, and you could just plug those into a thermostat I suppose. Dont know where you would put the probe though. You may also need a fan for summer, if the room gets really hot.

You can get oil filled radiators with thermostats built in, so you can set a maximum temperature, for under £100, from Comet or Argos etc.

Most reptile thermostats are only rated to 600W or so, and so are unsuitable for an electric heater that could be running at 2000W, so you'd need to ensure you get a radiator with a proper thermostat rather than settings like "low".

You can get Halogen heaters for about £10 which have 3 400W heating elements and are pretty economical (we just have one element on in the winter to 'top up' the temp in the room).

I went the Argos route and have a 2.5w oil filled radiator with a stat. Had to play around with the stat and a thermometer for a bit to get it working how I wanted, but it seems to have done a grand job since. A small fan positioned by the radiator will help with the air flow too, otherwise you may just get a really hot area at one side of the room and a moderately warm part at the other end...

Oops, didn't see this!

I don't really remember how much I paid but it wasn't much, maybe £40-£50? Just have a peek in the argos catalogue and look at the entry level 2.5w ones with inbuilt stats. A lot come with features that you don't really need so you can get good value at the lower price range. Wheels are handy too!

There's a bunch on this site --> Clicky Clicky
