I heard about one today who had told someone to feed their hatchling snake every day!!

I do think there are alot of shops who will tell you what they think you want to hear depending on what they have in stock. When they realise you keep other reptiles they tend to stop all the bull and are abit more honest with you.

agree with everything being said.
too many of the shops are in it to make money and nothing else, instead of selling whats right and wantin the return custom because there good, they want the big sale and dnt care about the rest.

I have hearded too many shops up my way giving wrong advise! knowledge is by farand away the most important thing.

my girlfriend works for the local shop, she knows her stuff, but because shes female noone will deal with her insted they deal with the boss who hasnt got a clue and just bulls to get sales.

the three things i notice most in a rep sho is

1: how well kept the animals are
2: how knowledgable the staff are, and how much of that knowledge they pass on when you buy something
3: prices! lol

Default What makes a good Reptile shop

1st and Foremost, is Knowledge about the Herpe`s that the shop as got.
Dont forget, Customers are almost new to Reptiles, so KNOWLEDGE is of extreme importance of all Reptiles. After all, the shop is selling some dangerous Reptiles. E.G. Boas. This in turn if the keepers of the shop as no knowledge, they are not only 1, putting that animal at risk but also the person/persons buying it. (you know what kids can be like.)

Clean cages, healthy Reptiles.
Well stocked shop.
Friendliness.
Care sheets given out when purchasing a Reptile.(am not going to say pets as they are not, all animals are wild under neath, no matter how tame they are.even cats and dogs.)
A shop that will direct you else where if they have not got what you want, rare that it is, but it does happen.
Thats my order of a Good reptile shop.

Personally I think it goes in this order for us;
  • Smell - you know straight away if a pet shop is clean the moment you walk in through the door. You can usually tell by this that the animals are being looked after well and that the owner can be bothered to clean them out.
  • Animals - If the animals are active and alert and their cages are clean and they have plenty of space/places to hide/water/correct setup
  • Stock - If the shop has well stocked shevles/live food in good condition ie it hasn't been sitting there for two weeks because knowone buys from them.
  • Staff - Knowledgable/presentable/approachable
Personally I think unless you regularly go to a particular shop your not going to go straight to the owner and start asking them questions. I base my judgement on shops by whether they stink or not.... sounds weird but you can have the most knowledgable person in the world working in a shop but if they can't be bothered to clean out the animals then it doesn't say much about how they animals are kept and I probably won't buy from them.
